All drivetrains are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Meh, who needs a heavy awd setup in a car when you know that good winter tires on a fwd or rwd car do the job just as good. 90% of people just buy cars with awd for the feel- good factor of having it.

AWD means you can just point the nose in the direction you want to go and mash the loud pedal.

I love you so much!

I’m saving that GIF and have a feeling it will be getting a lot of use now that Snow Tire season is coming near.

I’m not sure you’ve driven a lot of a AWD cars in the snow man... Doing so generates a shitload of understeer in an AWD.

only a RAV4 in a paddock, it doesn’t snow much in Australia.

But more fun. I’d rather oversteer into a tree than understeer into a ditch.

Haha, yeah that does not help. I would never trade the fun of a RWD car in the snow for the understeer of an AWD car...

Videos from last time I got to drive RWD and AWD in the snow back to back... Which one looks more fun? :)

OR you marry someone who has rarely seen snow and never driven in it, and you buy her a Subaru with snow tires to keep her safe.

Then buy yourself a 400+ HP RWD sedan with snow tires to keep life fun.

In terms of braking and cornering in the snow they do. The advantage AWD gives you is better acceleration which just means you are just going to end up deeper in the snow bank if you screw it up. Snow tires are just a good investment for any car.

Snownuts in FWD, just throw it in R.

Depends on the AWD system. My outback had an open diff in the front, a hydraulic “active” diff in the middle (it could actuate from something like 70-30 to 50-50 power split) and a limited slip in the rear. In D it would understeer when you mat it. However if you put it into 1 or 2 (which would lock the center to a 50-50 split) it would happily throw the rear out.

I’m sure the tires are the same regardless of the wheel they are on but the results may be different.

Please, RWD with Snow Tires is vastly inferior in snow to Screw Drive!

Out of all the Subarus I’ve driven in the snow or elsewhere (many), none wouldn’t understeer if you were to slam it mid-corner. All reacted very well to lift off oversteer, with a slam of the throttle to maintain the whole thing, but to launch it, I have yet to experience power oversteer with them...

Kinja'd!!! TheTurbochargedSquirrel > Flavien Vidal

I think it has mostly to do with the “locking” center diff in the 4eat paired with an open front and limited slip rear in the Outback. My friends legacy which was a 4eat with open diffs at front and rear required you to initiate the oversteer by lifting or left foot braking. This was only in 1 or 2 when the diff is forced to 50-50. In 3 or D it would understeer as the diff is allowed to vary.

The more things I need to do while driving, the more I enjoy it. That’s my fetish.

I need more pedals, more gear sticks, less grip.

Kinja'd!!! Nauraushaun > TheTurbochargedSquirrel

It’s not just better acceleration, it’s safer acceleration. If you accelerate while turning, there’s less chance you’ll spin in an AWD. This means you will have less accidents.

They’re not foolproof, snow tyres are a good idea. But AWD does have more grip when accelerating.

There’s a group of misinformed people who think AWD will dig them out of any problem. There’s a group of misinformed contrarians who think AWD has no benefits whatsoever in the snow. They’re both wrong, the truth is somewhere in the middle.
